Remember saying Who’s Glenn? when you reeeivcd an invitation for our 20th Reunion? I remember many classmates saying that. But I did not have to say Who’s Glenn? since I knew Glenn Jacobs for many of my school years. We had been friendly at school sharing various classes including 4th and 6th grade at Merion Elementary and Choir and German at Lower Merion. It was a nice school friendship like many others.Glenn remembered me also and asked me to join the 20th Reunion committee. That committee was a very special time for all of the members. We socialized a lot calling some of our gatherings meetings though they were more like cocktail parties. We got to know each other’s spouses during that time. My wife, Connie, who was teaching at Lower Merion that year became involved in the reunion by arranging for the cheerleaders and Bulldog to greet us as we arrived.Glenn and I kept in touch after the reunion getting together a few times over the next four years. Then it was time for the 25th Reunion, and I joined the committee again. Between the 25th and 30th we saw each other more frequently. What had started out as a classmate friendship was growing into a strong adult relationship. Connie started asking, When are we going to see Glenn again? Times and technology changed in the 90 s as staying in touch became even easier especially since we were both in the first wave of email users. We communicated more regularly and met more frequently having a favorite in-between restaurant, The Iron Hill Brewery in Media. And, like any old friends, each time we picked up our conversations right where we left off.Today with iPhones, iPads, and laptops we communicate all the time and often answer each other’s messages within minutes. We don’t meet in Media for lunch anymore, but Glenn now visits us in Ocean City, NJ where we have lived for the last six years. We have a favorite spot when we walk the boardwalk, Polish Water Ice, and a regular lunch spot at The Anchorage.Living in the Upper Main Line for 40 years and visiting with my mother in Narberth for the 30 years after graduation, I saw a lot of former classmates casually and entertained a few. I wish I were able to see those classmates and others from around the country even more. But we all know the busy lives we led building our careers and raising our families.I am glad that Glenn is the classmate to whom I became closest. He is a sincere and kind person who really cares about others, and for me he is a trusted and loyal friend whose friendship I value very much.
