Nina Dioz PERFORMING LIVE FRIDAY MAY 3RD, 2013
Hip-hop culture and music grabbed Niña Dioz early: At 8, she took her first toke of marijuana and listened to Cypress Hill at the urging of a cousin (she’s since quit smoking the herb). In her early teens, she began cutting her teeth in Monterrey’s hip-hop underground, at spots such as the Roche, where she kicked some of her first freestyle rhymes in the front of the club. She acquired her unusual moniker, which translates to female baby Jesus, after a woman in a cafe shouted it at her.
Since then, she’s spread her Latin Hip Hop gospel all over the Americas, appearing at Billboard Latino in Miami and the renowned music-a-thon SXSW. This Friday, Mexico’s #1 female rapper makes her Philadelphia debut, on the heels of her new EP release, “Indestructible” (available via iTunes), and she wants to know if ‘Illadelph’ is ready for her hard knock, border-smashing rhymes. In other words, can we kick it? Yes we can.
